48 hours in Reno

Reno may not be on your radar as a destination for foodies, fashionistas, artists, or sports enthusiasts. However, amidst the casinos a new Reno is emerging, and it’s one I can’t wait to revisit. In the last several years, a mix of entrepreneurs and artists have put down roots in the “Biggest Little City in the World,” and they are making big strides in turning Reno into the next hot travel destination. If you’ve got 48 hours, skip Las Vegas and spend your weekend in Reno. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

Where to stay in Reno

The Whitney Peak Hotel is one of the only boutique hotels in Reno. It’s right next door to the iconic Reno arch and its modern digs will make you feel right at home. The hotel is extremely dog friendly and is also home to BaseCamp, the world’s tallest climbing wall.

World’s tallest climbing wall

Towering above Reno at 164 feet, BaseCamp is located on the side of the Whitney Peak Hotel. Climbers of all skill level can test their strength on different color-coded routes. Inside, you’ll discover a 7,00-square-foot bouldering park for people of all ages. Guests of the hotel pay only US$10.00 for a day pass and a US$5.00 rental fee, making this an affordable and fun Reno adventure.

Shopping in Reno

If affordable vintage and second-hand shopping is what you’re after, look no further than Reno. Junkee Clothing Exchange has a mix of costumes, curiosities, and Burning Man accessories. The Melting Pot World Emporium is another must-shop, especially if you’re looking for festival wear, neon, or funky hats. It is “your source for everything great.”

Viewfinder Tip: The Whitney Peak Hotel is super dog friendly, so pack your pooch on your next Reno adventure!

Eating in Reno

Chef Mark Estee and his team are making “locally-sourced” and “farm-to-table” household terms on the Reno culinary scene. He works with local Nevada ranchers and farmers to bring the freshest ingredients to the table. Reno Provisions is Mark’s popular marketplace and demonstration kitchen where foodies can watch ingredients for his restaurants being prepared by his team of butchers, pasta makers, and bakers. Two of Mark’s other not-to-be-missed restaurants are Campo for rustic Italian and Heritage for farm-fresh goodness.

Art in Reno

Many Burning Man artists find a permanent home in Reno, making the city a breeding ground for creativity. Sculptures can be found all over the city, especially along the Truckee Riverwalk and at the Nevada Museum of Art. The Generator is a community arts space in Sparks, Nevada, where anyone can drop in to participate in the creation of all kinds of art.

Day trip to Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is only about a 45-minute drive from the heart of Reno, making it the perfect day trip! Rent a paddleboard on the crystal-clear lake and take a hike up to Monkey Rock for sweeping mountain views. Catch the sunset and roast some gourmet s’mores at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe before heading back to Reno.
