La Guingueta (Barceloneta ) $$ – A beach bar located in La Barceloneta run by Michelin star chef Carles Abellán. It has a juice bar and is located on the sand. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a juice, a smoothie or a shot of ginger at any time of the day. The juices are great, but they cost €7.50 or €8 and are almost like a meal in themselves.

Brunch & Cake by the Sea (Barceloneta and Eixample) $ – This brand of cool restaurants introduced brunch to Barcelona some years ago and now it has several locations. They started with cupcakes and their restaurants offer a brunch menu on weekends. Their Barceloneta site has a large terrace, but it’s always filled, and offers a very relaxed atmosphere.

Granja Petitbo (Eixample) $ – This is another place I love for its casual, industrial vintage decor. It was one of the first to set up on Passeig Sant Joan and bring the hipster crowd to this family residential district. It also offers brunch and breakfast such as oatmeal porridge. It is always open for a snack in the afternoon and an extensive menu of herbal teas. Personally I love the Mint Splash (€2)

Federal Café (Sant Antoni) $ – An institution in Barcelona because it is considered THE hipster coffee place in Poble Sec. It worked so well that Carrer Parlament has become the place to be with its cafés and trendy restaurants. I like the atmosphere best in the morning with people reading the newspaper while I enjoy the chia pudding with cocoa nibs and banana, which is breakfast enough for two.

Gallito (Barceloneta Beach) $$ – The boho chic beach bar, located in the W Hotel. Its location is superb, as it’s at the end of the promenade and there are no cars allowed. It has some lockers and a shower for those who rent the SUPs there. The terrace is large with a lot of plants and aromatic herbs. During the summer, they organise daytime parties on Sundays. The menu is Mediterranean and the best part is the view of the beach.

Iradier restaurant (Pedralbes) $$ – The new healthy restaurant of Upper Barcelona, located in the Metropolitan Gym. It has a daily set menu for €18 and offers healthy organic dishes also designed for athletes. Attention to detail is the key to their presentation and this artisan yoghurt with honey, for instance, looks like a work of art.  It’s a bit far off the tourist track, but if you go for a walk in the Sarrià neighbourhood you’ll be close.

Woki Market (several sites) $ – The Woki market has become the new chain organic and eco markets of Barcelona, with seven sites spread around the city. Some have a restaurant with a menu of woks and healthy dishes. The biggest and most pleasant one is on Passatge Marimón with its covered terrace and courtyard with natural lighting. The organic store is inside the restaurant. I like to order a rice noodles wok with vegetables.

+34 933 09 56 76[/expediafittybreaks-widget-at-glance-viewmap]

Sopa (Eixample and Poble Nou) $ – Sopa is a vegetarian restaurant with two quite new sites. You can choose the daily set menu at the bar for €9.90, and the dishes change every day. They also have some great organic lemonades; my favourite is the ginger. Filtered water is free and available in jars. Highly recommended if you want to eat healthy and vegetarian in Eixample.

Flax & Kale (Raval) $$ – Located near Plaça Catalunya and the MACBA, this is the coolest restaurant of the Teresa Carles group. They define themselves as a cool flexitarian restaurant with an extensive menu designed for nutritional value. 80% of the menu is vegetarian and the rest includes bluefish. At the entrance there is a large glass cabinet with all Teresa’s Juicery cold-pressed juices. I love the roasted carrots and avocado (€9.50), as you can really tell the time the carrots spent in the oven, a really fresh delight.

Teresa Carles (Gothic) $$ – One of the first trendy vegetarians in Barcelona. They say they started out in 1979, but this restaurant isn’t even 10 years old. It has a salad bar at the entrance and you can make original mixes with tofu, tempeh, dried figs, all kinds of sprouts and seeds and vegan sauces from €8.50.

Celeri (Eixample) $$$ – This is the restaurant run by chef Xavier Pellicer underneath the woki market on Passatge Marimón. With natural light and designed by Sandra Tarruella, you can taste culinary dishes based on healthy and local products. The menu is based on seasonal vegetables and organic meat. I love the beet, tomato and grape gazpacho (€7.50), refreshing and slightly sweet, perfect for summer with a passion pink colour.

The Green Spot (Barceloneta) $$ – One of my favourite sites in Barcelona. One of the best vegetarians to go to with friends and have a good time. The decor is vintage Scandinavian cosy and great acoustics for such a large room. The bar overlooking the inner courtyard with its tropical garden gives a green touch, and the background music fits in perfectly. Willy is the guy in charge of making sure you have a good time and is always smiling. Here, I always order the quinoa salad and cherry tomatoes, but the menu changes all year round to incorporate seasonal vegetables. A good dinner with starter, main course and dessert can set you back €35, but it’s best to share the dishes to try everything.

+34 931 86 63 60[/expediafittybreaks-widget-at-glance-viewmap]

Gut (Gràcia) $ – A small neighbourhood restaurant with a menu of seasonal products with vegetarian, gluten-free and organic options. I love the fresh white atmosphere with natural wood chairs, but my favourite part is the cosy dining atmosphere with its warm candlelight. It’s on a quiet pedestrian street in Gràcia, there aren’t many tables and it looks like everyone knows each other. At my last dinner, I paid less than €27 with a glass of wine and no dessert: vegetable gyoza (€7.50), aubergine and quinoa burger (€11.50) with deluxe chips (€3).

Best juice bars (cold pressed) & snacks in Barcelona

+34 933 17 56 64[/expediafittybreaks-widget-at-glance-viewmap]

Teresa’s Juicery (El Born) $ – This juice bar is part of the Teresa Carles and Flax & Kale restaurants was, in my opinion, responsible for the popularity of cold-pressed juices thanks to its wide selection of juices with fun names and original blends that are heavy on super foods. My favourite, the Virus Killer Ginger + Lemon + Purified Water + Pear + Honey + Echinacea + Thyme.

Satan’s Café Corner, (Eixample) $ – A café that serves only coffee, no teas or sodas. They have some snacks and cookies to go with the coffee – and a fantastic mango chia pudding.

Obbio (Eixample) $ – A modern supermarket with organic products, offers both food and cosmetics and cleaning products. At the back of the store there is a cosy café where they serve dishes prepared with 100% organic, wholemeal dishes, mainly vegetables and seasonal produce, but the best part is to take a break during the shopping to enjoy to the carrot cake (€2.75) with one of their many green teas
