When travelling Fiona is never far from great sun baking or hiking spot and keeps a healthy balance of fitness and fun on all her adventures.[/expediafittybreaks-widget-author]

I’m a native Victorian but after years of living in Sydney I’ve got to say the café scene here is something to behold. Thanks to current laws, cafés in Australia’s largest city are thriving because we Sydney-siders do all our socialising over smoothies before it gets dark and have nothing to do.

So, as an avid coffee drinker and prolific taste tester of all things yummy, I’ve done the ground work suburb by suburb to help narrow down where to get the freshest low-key eats in Sydney. Here goes…

Double Bay – About Life
If you’re ‘about dat good life’, About Life is the grocery store/café for you. This place is every healthy eater’s dream with an affordable organic menu that will please any foodie who insists food should be produced ethically and sustainably.

They also have a buffet! A buffet! This self-service station means you can buy a decent-sized food box for under $15 and stack it full to the brim with the likes of organic curries, salads, veggies, fruits, yoghurts and even pasta. Oh, and there’s a whole raw dessert section.

Also if you’re wanting quick, healthy dinner options, About Life’s organic thin pizzas are amazing and take just 15 to cook in your oven.

Potts Point – Whole Foods Department
This local favourite sits in the heart of Potts Point, offering simple, yet tasty food with excellent service.

It’s the perfect place to hit up after a sweat sesh – the menu boasts a huge variety of great post-workout meals. The Warming Ricotta Pancakes are a favourite of mine in the morning because they’re low carb but high protein, and the Love Elixir is a nice way to kick off the day. Good coffee too!

Surry Hills – Ouroboros Wholefood Cafe
An arty space in trendy Surry Hills that serves up plenty of organic modern Australian options. You can expect a bit of a wait for the food but it’s worth it. I’d suggest the burgers as they can satisfy the gluten and dairy-free peeps among us.

Bronte – Three Blue Ducks
This is Melbourne alleyway dining just a stone throw away from one of Sydney’s most beloved beaches. The Ducks in Bronte has a totally different ambiance to the restaurant’s Byron Bay offering but this casual and cosy Sydney spot has a similar ambitious menu with specials inspired by seasonal ingredients.

Breakfast time here is my favourite as it’s a great pit stop before a long beach day – the salmon is great!

Glebe – Ungaro Raw
An exciting vegetarian find in the inner west, this café is good for those on a meat-free health kick. There’s plenty of options that will fill you up without stuffing you with carbs and starch.
The last time I was there I was ravenous and ordered the Haloumi burger; I was not disappointed.

Sydney CBD – Thr1ve
It’s hard to find somewhere that serves fresh and healthy eats while you’re on the go in the CBD. So often you’re stuck with sushi, but if a fast and filling salad is what you’re after, Thr1ve is a good go to.
Located just off Pitt St Mall, it’s a little more pricey than standard food court offerings, but it’s where you’ll find a great low-carb and wheat-free menu. The Superbowl offers a nice protein hit stacked with fresh veggies.

Bondi – Orchard Street
I always love visiting Orchard Street for a little pick me up elixir. With locations in Paddington, Bronte and Bondi, the stores are like a relaxed sanctuary serving up kombucha on tap as well as light, healthy snacks and products steeped in ayurvedic roots.
I love my Bondi to Bronte walk so Orchard is in the perfect spot to swing by post-beach walk no matter what direction I go from.

Manly – Ruby Lane Wholefoods
A great family friendly health spot over the North side of the bridge. These guys serve up wholesome brekkies with amazing eggs and they are all too happy to carter to any of your dietary requirements.

The Yogi Bowl is a fave as well as the Garden Bowl. Also, side note for all those ethical eaters, this Manly venue is about to become the first restaurant in the country serving MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified sustainable seafood so that’s a big plus.
