Expedia Helps Travelers Protect Their Vacation Investment With Comprehensive Trip Insurance Offering

BELLEVUE, Wash., Aug. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Expedia.com® (NASDAQ: EXPE), the world's leading online travel service, is expanding its suite of travel insurance offerings by launching Expedia® Package Protection. The plan includes coverage for airline, hotel, car and activities service fees in the event the traveler changes or cancels a trip for any reason prior to the start of the trip or interrupts a trip for a covered reason.*

“We are always looking for ways to provide travelers with superior services to ensure they are confident in knowing they have flexibility when planning and booking travel on Expedia,” says Troy Brown, vice president of packages, Expedia.com. “By guarding against cancellation penalties and providing travelers with an important safeguard before, during and after their trip, Expedia® Package Protection takes the worry out of vacation planning and purchase.”

In addition to trip cancellation/interruption coverage, the plan provides reimbursement for expenses incurred if travel is delayed due to bad weather, strike or mechanical failure. In the event of a medical emergency while traveling, the plan provides reimbursement for medical expenses and coverage for emergency medical transportation. Benefits are also provided for baggage and personal effects that are lost, stolen, delayed or damaged during travel. Further information, including coverage terms, conditions, and exclusions, is available through Expedia's website during the booking process.

Expedia® Package Protection plan pricing varies depending on the trip destination. Some examples of plan costs are; $49 per person for travel within Continental U.S., $69 per person for travel from the U.S. to Europe and $89 per person for travel from the U.S. to South America/Africa/Middle East or for multiple destinations. Expedia® Package Protection is only available for purchase at the time of booking.

Expedia also offers travelers its Hassle-Free Hurricane Promise if a hurricane threatens to spoil their vacation. If a hurricane watch or warning has been issued and a traveler needs to change their trip, Expedia® will waive associated Expedia.com cancellation fees, advocate with its travel partners to waive associated fees and assist in re-booking the entire trip, including flight and activities. Travelers would also receive additional support through travel alerts and 24/7 customer service.

*Reimbursement for cancellations may be covered under Expedia's Cancellation Fee Waiver (see below), or under the insurance portion of the plan.

Expedia's Cancellation Fee Waiver

If a trip must be cancelled for ANY REASON not covered by the insurance prior to the start of a trip, all package cancellation fees imposed by Expedia, Inc. will be waived, except the cost of Published Air. The value of Published Air may be used within airline dictated length of time after original ticket issue date, and Expedia, Inc. will absorb the change fee. The actual airfare could be higher at the time of rebooking; in that event the price differential would be the customer's responsibility. Customers are allowed to change or cancel a trip for any reason one (1) time prior to the start of a trip.

Full refund may not apply to some flights. Vacation packages will contain either merchant air or published air; the cost of merchant air can be refunded under Expedia's Cancellation Fee Waiver in Section I of the plan while published air cannot. However, published air may be covered under the insurance policy in Section I of the plan if cancellation is due to covered reasons. Alternatively, customers can contact Expedia travel experts at 1-800-551-2534 to ensure packages are booked with a fully refundable flight. [However, even if a nonrefundable published flight is booked, customers can still use the flight (usually for up to one year from the original booking date), and Expedia will pay any flight change fees.

The insurance portion of the plan is underwritten by National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, Pa., a Pennsylvania Insurance Company, who is a member of the AIG Companies® with their principal place of business at 70 Pine Street, New York, NY 10270. It is currently authorized to transact business in all states and the District of Columbia. NAIC #19445. All coverages may not be available in all states. The insurance plan is administered by BerkelyCare, a division of Affinity Insurance Services, Inc.

  9. Don’t get the travel insurance it is a scam. It takes 4-7 days for a processor to even look at it and then if they approve your reason for canceling even though the add says any reason. They will issue a paper check that could take several business days to get to you. I was going to send an employee to London from the states and the work even was canceled I had to eat the cost of the ticket because it wasn’t covered under reasons… Seems like a good reason to me. Scam! Shame on you Expedia!

  10. Don’t make the protection plan – you will end up paying for the change. In order to get back your money only in certain cases might be giving you back half or nothing of what you paid.

    Save your 35$ it’s better

  11. When I buy the air ticket, at the same time, I buy the trip insurance. When I have an emergency, I need to cancel the flight. Instead of cancelling the flight, I am told I cancel the insurance. I do not know I can cancel the insurance once I buy it.
At the end, I have to pay for the ticket – no refund.

  12. We booked flights on Expedia- Jet Blue from RDU to Turks & Caicos ( connection Fort Lauderdale) – May 7, 2019. Flight was delayed in RDU and we missed our connection. No other flights out that day. We had to drive to Miami and purchase 2 new ticktes thru American Airlines. Who do we contact for reimbursement to use out Travel Protection we purchased.

  13. DO NOT BUY THIS “INSURANCE!” IT IS A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RIP-OFF. THEY WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO NOT PAY YOUR CLAIM. WHAT IS WRITTEN BELOW IS PATENTLY UNTRUE!
