Unless you are used to it, early mornings are never easy. Especially in the winter months, when the sun takes its time to get the morning rolling and the temperatures make you want to stay buried deep inside your comforter. But as soon as your feet hit the cold floor, it is too late to turn around.

Put on your shoes and head down to the new La Marzocco cafe and showroom (472 1st Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109)  that shares the building with the legendary KEXP radio station in the shadow of the Space Needle. La Marzocco features a rotating list of coffee roasters from around the country and is the perfect place to get your morning coffee fix to kick off your day in the city that created the modern coffee culture.

Head outside and take a stroll through Seattle Center and the TV towers on top of Queen Anne Hill loom above you. A overly steep looking street beckons. Make your way up onto Highland St and hit up Kerry Park for the postcard-worthy view of downtown Seattle, Puget Sound and Mt. Rainier. Those who watched sitcoms in the 90s will recognize this as the view from Frasier’s apartment.

Rent a Pronto rental bike and make your way up to bustling Capitol Hill. Seattle is pretty far from flat, so by the time you reach your destination you will most likely be parched and hungry. Good thing Capitol Hill is home to Metier (1017 E Union St, Seattle, WA 98122), part cafe, part bike shop, part gym. Hop in and check out a yoga class or simply enjoy some healthy food that tastes like it should be bad for you (think Belgian waffles with house-made kimchi and smoked salmon). Enjoy another espresso, or if it is that time already, a pint of local beer.

After lunch, head down to Lake Union, usually buzzing with boats, paddle boarders and float planes. Rent a kayak from Northwest Outdoor Center and explore the Lake by boat, paddle under draw bridges as buzzing float planes come in for landing right overhead. It is not uncommon to see otters along for the ride. If kicking back with a dozen oysters and a beer is more your speed, check out Westward (2501 N Northlake Way, Seattle, WA 98103) on the north side of the lake and sit by the fire pit  while enjoying views of the city.

You cannot visit Seattle without checking out Pike Place Market (between Union & Lenora, west of 2nd Ave). While a lot of it is stoked with touristy odds and ends, a lot of locals secretly shop here for some of the freshest produce and seafood in town.

At this point it is probably time for a cocktail, so head down down the steps from the market to Zig Zag (1501 Western Ave #202, Seattle, WA 98101), one of the older cocktail joint in town and reflect on the long day.

Looking for something more “Northwest-y”? Take the ferry to Bainbridge Island to have breakfast and coffee and hope back on the ferry to enjoy the view of Seattle coming into view over the open expanse of Puget Sound.
