Munich Fitness Breaks
The name of Munich may evoke visions of football and the Oktoberfest, traditional lederhosen and hearty cuisine – even and especially beyond the borders of Germany. But fitness? A fitness holiday in Munich seems like a far-fetched idea – even though the Bavarian capital famously hosted the Olympics in 1972, and the spirit of the games never left the city. Go for a hike to Lake Hinterbrühler See, a run in the Olympic Park, a mountain bike tour along the Isar river or head to the Eisbach creek with your surfboard. Seriously! Surfing on the rapids of the little creek is one of the favourite pastimes of Munich residents in the summer, when the riverbank in the English Garden turns into a meeting place for sports enthusiasts and sun worshippers. Even in culinary terms, the capital of the ‘Free State’ has undergone great changes: Fancy something vegetarian, vegan or sustainably grown instead of its traditional fare of pork knuckle and roast chicken? You will be spoilt for choice.
