LGBT wedding and honeymoon guide: Kauai

Finding an ideal LGBT wedding or honeymoon spot on Kauai

“Live pono” is a Hawaiian term that loosely translates to “live well and be true to yourself.” While the spirit of “live pono” can be found on all of Hawaii’s spectacular tropical islands, the idea of authenticity and living in line with your values seems especially present on Kauai, which is why it is such a wonderful place for LGBT couples to get married or celebrate their commitment.

As more and more LGBT couples enjoy the right to legally recognized marriage, decisions about where to hold and celebrate those special events have become more important than ever before. We’re familiar with a host of properties on Kauai and know several with long-standing cultures of equality. In many cases, we have met with property leaders to confirm their commitment to creating outstanding wedding and honeymoon experiences, regardless of a visitor’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Here are a few of our faves.

The St. Regis Princeville Resort. St. Regis has been synonymous with luxury for decades. That perception is well-earned, but also can make the brand feel a bit off-limits to many travelers. Having personally experienced the welcoming St. Regis Princeville resort ourselves, we can assure you that ultra-luxury does not come at the cost of warmth. In fact, we had a Lomilomi couple’s massage at the resort’s heavenly spa, and it was nothing short of a spiritual experience.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa. If you want a stunning backdrop for your ceremony, the Grand Hyatt Kauai is a pretty beautiful spot. But the expansive, perfectly manicured grounds are just one of the many reasons this property is so special. Outstanding service and Hyatt’s commitment to inclusiveness that extends to every guest make it one of our favorite places in the world.

Hanalei Colony Resort. As far as we are concerned, there is nothing more romantic than a killer hike. If you share that vision, then unpretentious Hanalei Colony resort is your spot. While most people will find the right-on-the-ocean location to be the big draw, we are most drawn to the property because it is just minutes away from one of the world’s most beautiful hikes, the Kalalau Trail in the N? Pali Coast State Park.

Wyndham Koloa Landing at Poipu Beach. Many LGBT couples have had families for years but only recently have enjoyed the right to marry. This means it’s not unusual to have a same-sex wedding ceremony that includes the kids. Koloa Landing’s enormous luxury condos and always-sunny south-island location make this spot ideal. The massive gourmet kitchens and an “I can’t believe this place isn’t more expensive” price point make it a popular choice for families on a budget.

The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas. This all-suites property is another excellent choice for couples who are bringing their families. With four pools, in-suite laundry, and full kitchens, you’ll have all the comforts of home, as well as quick access to some truly remarkable hidden North Shore beaches.
