Romancing Las Vegas

When you’re thinking about romantic getaways, it can be easy to forget about Las Vegas. The truth is, Sin City offers something for everyone, has great accommodations, and is a land where (grown-up) dreams come true. At least once a year Tawny and I make it a goal to get to Vegas and stay somewhere new. We like to mix up our romance with different themed travel. For that, there’s hardly a more affordable place than Vegas.

As far as wining and dining go, Las Vegas almost presents too many options. Some of the more notable choices: Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steak in The Mirage and Gordon Ramsay’s BurGR in Planet Hollywood. Heritage is great if you want high-class date night and the chance to don your finest attire. As you might have guessed, it’s a steak house, and all of the dishes are cooked on an open-flame grill, chock full of white oak. The unmistakable flavors of bold flame and soft smoke are seared into the highest grade cuts of meat. This culinary paradise floats in the middle of a candlelit courtyard and is enough to rekindle the fire of passion in any heart.

If you’re in the mood for something more reminiscent of a first date–but still as fiery–head on over to BurGR. With this spot, controversial British Chef Gordon Ramsay has bridged the gap between burger joint and high-end restaurant. Our favorite date-night meal is the sexy Britannia burger, with sharp cheddar, arugula, and mango chutney. We order it with a side of truffle fries. Take heed my friends: The key to a woman’s heart is through her stomach.

In case you’re in the mood to skip dinner and go straight to dessert, we’d recommend La Creperie in Paris Las Vegas, where chefs serve up something for every couple, whether you want to be savory or sweet. Another hot spot is Serendipity 3, in front of Caesars Palace. This whimsical cafe offers sweet treats for any palate, including goodies such as sundaes and frozen hot chocolate. No matter what you get, make sure to order just one with two straws.

Viewfinder Tip: For a truly romantic experience, consider one of the couples’ massages at the MGM Grand.

When in Las Vegas, we also love to go out to shows. Some of our favorites: the Cirque du Soleil shows. Right now there are eight such shows in Sin City, and each one builds fantastical worlds on a firm foundation of the best acrobatics on Earth. For those inclined toward epic storytelling, snuggle up to your sweetie and get swept away by KA. This feat of human perfection and technology is the story of two twins separated when their kingdom comes under attack. The most impressive part of the show actually is the stage; the center performance area sits on a hydraulic arm, and is capable of becoming a horizontal wall in seconds. If you’re in the mood for something a touch more sensual, jet across the street to New York-New York Hotel & Casino and catch Zumanity. This Cirque du Soleil show is a blend of acrobatics and traditional cabaret. When you sit down in the lavish seats, you can expect a wild roller coaster of raunchy jokes and mind-bending stunts.

Whether you’re looking for a sweet spot to dine or you’re scoping out places to feast your eyes, Las Vegas won’t leave you wanting. With a spectrum of themes, great shows and criminally low prices, what’s not to love?

When you’re talking romance, do you prefer dinner or show?
