In September 2014, Hurricane Odile devastated Los Cabos. With the support of the travel industry, government, and others, this iconic and beloved Mexican beach vacation destination is making a quick recovery. Unstoppable Los Cabos is back and open for business.

I remember our first trip to Los Cabos in the early 1990s. I was a college student, marveling in the beauty of Cabo’s beaches and beautiful landscape by day, and enjoying the lively clubs into the wee hours of every night. (Okay, some of the memories of the nightlife are *very* fuzzy.)

That is the beauty of Los Cabos; whether you are looking for the fun, party atmosphere of downtown Cabo San Lucas or you prefer the slower pace of a romantic, luxury resort near the sleepier San Jose del Cabo, there is a vacation for every budget and style.

Some of my favorite activities in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo include soaking in the beautiful Baja Peninsula landscape and sunshine, whale-watching, golfing, sitting poolside, or rod-fishing the Sea of Cortez. Of course I also love some of the local hotels, such as the luxurious One & Only Palmilla resort.

Viewfinder Tip: With clean-up underway in Los Cabos, be sure to confirm renovation schedules before you book a hotel.

On that first trip to Cabo, my husband and I awoke early after a (very) late night sipping margaritas and walked from our marina hotel to meet our small fishing boat captain, “Captain Ernie.” As the sun rose over the marina, we climbed aboard Ernie’s little panga boat—a modest-sized, open, outboard-powered fishing boat lined with many fishing rods in various sizes.

As we headed out to a prime fishing spot where the Sea of Cortez met the Pacific Ocean, we asked Ernie what we were going to catch that morning. He replied that we’d be fishing for many different kinds of fish, including ahi, dorado (mahi mahi), and blue marlin. I was not an experienced deep-sea fisherwoman, but I knew that there were reports of marlin known to reach 1,200 pounds—clearly bigger than the small, little wooden boat keeping us afloat in the middle of this vast blue sea.

We never ended up catching a marlin (thank goodness), but the fish tale sometimes is better than the catch.

  • Where two seas meet, one paradise

Today, as two busy parents, we prefer a more relaxed Los Cabos vacation experience that includes lounging at a luxury resort, sipping margaritas poolside, and downing some delicious fish tacos.

If you are in search of a relaxing Cabo vacation, consider booking one of the most popular hotels on Expedia including; Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas, Riu Sante Fe, or the Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort, all of which are all-inclusive. Another option: the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. Then, of course, there’s Palmilla.

No matter what style of Baja beach vacation you prefer, Los Cabos is back and better than ever. Give it a chance and you may just fall in love with Cabo all over again.

What is your favorite way to spend a day in Los Cabos?
