Top 5 babymoon getaways

Babymoons are becoming the next big thing in the realm of travel. What’s a babymoon, you ask? Babymoons are similar to throwing a bachelor/bachelorette party before your wedding. It’s a “last hurrah” before the arrival of the new addition and the departure of beloved sleep.

Babymoon getaways can come in all shapes and sizes. We’ve listed a few of our favorite babymoon options below along with location and hotel suggestions.

Babymoon by the beach

Moms-to-be typically need a little extra vitamin D during their pregnancy (hey, it’s a fact!), thus a tropical babymoon by the beach is a no-brainer. Let the calming waves soothe you to sleep as you soak up these last few months sans baby. This is the perfect time to catch some rays—lather on the SPF as expecting mamas tend to burn faster—and indulge in romantic one-on-one time with your partner.

Our suggestion: Maui, Hawaii

Maui is the perfect place to jet off to before the little one arrives. Our resort of choice, the Grand Wailea, offers spacious rooms, fine dining, easy beach access, and one of the best water parks we’ve ever encountered. Expecting moms will love floating in the lazy river as it relieves pressure off of their growing tummies and backs. If you want to truly treat yourself, head to Spa Grande for a relaxing massage or a Terme Hydrotherapy session.

City escape babymoon

The hustle and bustle of a busy city might be a great foray into what life will be like once the little one arrives.  A city babymoon affords many opportunities to shop (for you and the mini-me), to enjoy an array of hip restaurants, and to frolic around the town sans cumbersome stroller. Take the opportunity to stroll the streets hand-in-hand with your significant other and be sure to treat yourself to a fancy meal or city tour.

Our suggestion: Brooklyn, New York

Stay at the Henry Normal Hotel, one of the hippest boutique hotels in town and enjoy the eccentric ambiance of Brooklyn. The hotel lofts are airy and bright and within walking distance of delicious local eats. Hop on the metro to take in the sights of Manhattan and head back to your trendy room at night. This is the trip where you give in to those pregnancy cravings. Cronuts, anyone?

Overseas babymoon

Traveling in your second trimester is typically preferred as most women are finally getting over their morning sickness and have yet to develop a large and uncomfortable bump. These are the golden months where mamas-to-be can hop on a longer flight before being grounded in the third trimester. Always check with your doctor before heading overseas, but if you’re in the clear, take this opportunity to explore a new (or favorite) country.

Our suggestion: London, England

A trip to fancy London town allows expectant parents to enjoy a new culture without stretching themselves too far outside of their comfort zone. Enjoy walks through Kensington Gardens and spend at least one afternoon in a local tea house—complete with mini sandwiches, biscuits, and scones. The Tube is a fast and affordable way to get around town and gives mom some time off of her feet.

Viewfinder Tip: Some international flights offer special in-air amenities to expecting women. Inform your airline of your pregnancy once you book.

As far as hotels go, The Grand at Trafalgar Square is both opulent and inviting. Covent Garden, Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery, and the theatre district are all within walking distance. If you want to cap off your day at a local haunt, head to the nearby Sherlock Holmes Pub for some traditional British fare.

A nature lover’s babymoon

For those who want to immerse themselves in nature before the arrival of their bundle, a National Park babymoon might be the way to go. Spend the day hiking your favorite trails and head back to the hotel at night for a little rest and relaxation.

Our suggestion: The Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is a great place for any expecting outdoor enthusiasts. There are day hikes for all levels of expertise along with ample shopping and dining opportunities. El Tovar is our hotel of choice along with the property’s lounge and restaurant (be sure to check out the dessert tray upon entering).

A relaxing staycation babymoon

There’s nothing wrong with staying close to home for your babymoon. They money you save on airfare can be put towards that fancy hotel that you’ve had your eye on for years. The best part of a staycation babymoon is that as long as you stay relatively close to home, you can realistically take one up until you give birth (hello, week 39).

Our suggestion: Seattle, Washington

Since the hubs and I live in Tacoma, we decided to take our staycation babymoon to Seattle. The 40-minute drive is an easy one to make. I plan on ordering room service, taking long soaks in the tub, and enjoying life at a slower pace.

Inn at the Market is located steps from the famous Pike Place Market where we’ll take our daily morning strolls. I’m also planning on stuffing my face with Italian food at the Pink Door.

Regardless of where (or how) you celebrate your last few months before baby, be sure to schedule in lots of time for rest and relaxation. Your new little adventurer is sure to keep you on your toes once he or she arrives.
